A Rare Nail Disorder with a "Rising Sun" Appearance: My Recent Case Report Published in IJDVL

Aug 18, 2024

I’m excited to share some insights from a recent case report that I was fortunate to be part of. It’s not every day that we come across something as unusual as this—a nail condition that literally looked like a "Rising Sun."

The Story Behind the Case

The patient in question was taking lacosamide, a commonly prescribed medication for epilepsy. What’s fascinating (and concerning) is that this drug led to a rare and dramatic nail disorder called haemorrhagic onychomadesis. Essentially, the nails started detaching from the nail bed, and there was bleeding underneath, which created this striking "Rising Sun" look on the nails. It's something you wouldn’t typically associate with this medication, making the case quite unique.

Why This Matters

So, why should we care about this? Well, it's a reminder that even medications we consider safe can have unexpected side effects. In this case, the unusual nail changes could easily have been missed or misdiagnosed, which would delay proper care for the patient. Recognizing these kinds of rare reactions can make a big difference in how we manage our patients’ health.

Final Thoughts

Cases like this keep us on our toes and remind us of the complexity of patient care. If you’re interested in the full details of the case, you can check out the report in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology (IJDVL) here.
